A modern take
on natural dyeing
All our pieces are hand-dyed with unique, carefully planned and developed recipes born from Nature and her plant pigments, forming an organic flow of colour, reflecting the natural world. We extract color from seasonal plants, withered flowers, and food leftovers, or we use natural pigments.
Most pieces are dyed with experimental techniques that leave just enough space for randomness for us to learn to walk the tightrope between planning and letting go of control. This type of dyeing invites us to trust the process unfolding and forms unique patterns, making each piece completely one of a kind.
All the items in the shop have been pretreated with professional fabric-treatment techniques to ensure longevity of the color for years to come. Still, natural dyes are ‘living colors’ and will—like everything natural—change in time together with you. For a long-lasting color, you’ll put some extra love into taking care of your item. Wash it gently at 30 degrees with a mild detergent and avoid leaving it in direct sunlight.
Good for the soul, body & planet.
Our choice of materials is first and foremost suitable for the product itself. We don’t use materials that simply feel good on our skin but materials that are also sustainable, long-lasting and are good for our planet. Some of the main materials that we use are TENCEL™ Lyocell, GOTS-certified organic cotton and bamboo silk made in a closed loop process.
Our pieces are made and colored in small batches or individually. Many of our pieces, especially clothing items, are also made to order, which is a concept that minimizes waste by initiating crafting only upon order placement, making it one of the most sustainable and environmentally friendly approaches to clothing production.
Made by Local Makers–Masters of their Craft.
We’ve established a network of local, heartfelt seamstresses and other makers—people who are not just a workforce, but whose stories we know, who have been immersed in this work their whole lives and truly are masters of their craft. We believe that the love and energy put into creating every piece can be seen, but more importantly, felt.
Our alternative to the mainstream petroleum-based dyes.
Can you imagine that until just 160 years ago, every piece of textile was dyed with colors and pigments found in nature? The first synthetic dye was accidentally discovered in 1856 by Sir William Henry Perkin while he was searching for a cure for malaria. Ever since, due to cheaper production costs, consistency, and ease of use, the heritage of coloring with natural pigments has been slowly declining. Most of what we wear is now dyed with synthetic dyes, often derived from petroleum.
Our skin is our biggest organ, absorbing everything it touches. Do we really want it to be covered with cloth dyed with petroleum-based dyes? Once you see nature creating such rich colors, it’s hard to imagine that we allow the synthetic dye industry to be one of the top polluters of our world’s water. Heavy metals used to fix the color onto the fabric are not biodegradable—they can take over 300 years to disintegrate, while destroying ecosystems and contaminating drinking water sources.
An invitation to slow process and a more present life.
The sole process of preparing fabric to be dyed with natural dyes takes around 8 hours and includes 6 steps. Working with nature, there are many variables influencing the process and outcome that one simply has to learn how to work with nature and trust in the magic.
As your items go through this process, they start carrying the essence of patience, of awe, of surrender, of slowing down enough to notice the beauty around you at every step. They become constant reminders of patience, of presence and magic that lies in the simplest of things like a flowing piece of fabric, color swirls created by natural pigments or realising the item you’re interacting with or wearing was made by a human whose story is just as complex as yours.
Above all, naturally dyed pieces teach us acceptance and offer a moment to connect with the core of our natural state of being: content, present, unplanned.
